Ocean Wonders: Sharks! at New York Aquarium - Coney Island - Wildlife Conservation Society

I was hired by The Portico Group to provide technical archiectural experience preparing permit and construction documents for the new Shark Aquarium building. It was an inspiring experience to work with the project managers, designers, architects, and exhibit designers at Portico. I am very proud of my involvement with the project. It opened June 30, 2018.

  • As part of its global shark conservation efforts, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) maintains a research aquarium at Coney Island, in concert with the New York Aquarium. Portico’s challenge was to design a replacement facility, one with larger tanks offering more research opportunities that also functions as a popular visitor attraction and shark interpretation resource. Working closely with WCS, Portico designed a rich and colorful Coral Reef tank and an expansive Open Ocean tank, both alive with swimming sharks and supporting interpretive materials.
  • Awarded the 2012 Public Design Commission of the City of New York Award for Excellence in Design
